Quick Guide: Preparing Your UK Wedding Venue for Martyn’s Law

Venue staff briefing Martyn's Law

The UK government has introduced landmark counter-terrorism legislation, often referred to as Martyn’s Law (officially the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025). This new legislation introduces vital legal duties for public spaces and events, including wedding venues.

If your venue hosts weddings and events, it is highly likely you will be impacted. Here is a quick summary of what you need to know.

The Timeline

  • Passed: The Bill received Royal Assent on 3 April 2025.
  • Enforcement: There is a 24-month implementation period. The law will become legally enforceable around April 2027.

Are You Affected?

The law operates on a tiered system based on the maximum capacity of your venue (including guests, suppliers, and staff):

  • Standard Tier (200 – 799 capacity): Focuses on simple, low-cost procedures, staff training, and clear emergency plans (Evacuation, Lockdown, Communication).
  • Enhanced Tier (800+ capacity): Requires stricter measures, including potential physical security upgrades and formal risk assessments.

What You Need to Do

Even if your venue hosts private, invite-only weddings, if your primary business is hospitality or leisure, you fall under the scope of this Act. The Security Industry Authority (SIA) will regulate compliance, and venues will be required to register and demonstrate they have robust public protection procedures in place.

Don’t wait until 2027 to get your venue ready. The safety of your events and guests depends on proactive preparation.
